Swing into Spring Tip

22 March 2009

I believe that the most important variable all players must understand while making improvements in the golf swing is the magnitude of ball flight rules.

Looking at the changes the best player in the world has made over the last five years has left players and coaches around the world retooling their methods. The most noticeable change is the ability to control the trajectory of the ball under pressure.

The ability to maintain your hands and body positions at impact will produce a consistent ball flight.

Drill

The purpose of this drill is to create level hips and shoulders at impact with the emphasis placed on the left leg as your single axis point.

  1. Using an 8-iron place a ball on a downhill lie with the feet slightly closer with together the ball position slightly forward in your stance.
  2. Allow the weight to be positioned 55% on your left side, matching your shoulders and hips to return to the impact position parallel.
  3. Step forward after impact to exaggerate the weight on your left side not using the back leg as a lever or support.

Understanding that the hand positions are directly correlated to the positioning of the shoulders and hips at impact, the ability to maintain and develop proper body positions will lead to better results.
