Via Rail Cup

July 11th, 2010

The drive back from Montreal wasn’t as enjoyable as 2009, this year we struggled to get the ball in the hole, leaving the doors open for an early exit in the second round of the event.
The good news is I’ll have a day to spend with my family and tune things up for the PGA Championship at the Barrie country club Monday .

Keep your Head Down ????

March 15th, 2010

Keep your head down? True or false

Answer:  FALSE

Changing our golf swings sometimes is an on going process, we have to commit valuable time to improve, and constantly refine.  Every spring we set our sights on breaking 100 or 80 for the first time, working on changing our path of the club, grip, posture, ball position and the list goes on.

Unfortunately we all don’t have those winter getaways to work on our games, therefore   the position of the club head and marriage of the hands tend to be weak or flippy at impact either because of lack of feel or poor marriage of the hands to start the swing. Start developing a simple routine every spring that will ensure more distance, better ball flight and consistent results.

I would like to reinforce that  that vertical movement of the head before impact will result in inconsistent results;  but lateral movement of the head towards the entended target will improve impact!

Drill

We all were taught that the head must be stationary and may never move,” keep your eyes on the ball”. I want to change the way you practice

The beautiful thing about this drill is that it doesn’t require a ball , feeling  the correct movement of the  head  in relation to the hands and body  moving through the impact position will produce more consistent results.

  1. Position yourself in a correct starting position (in front of a mirror or a reflection of a window)  with a club , start to initiate the  movement of  the lower body,  noticing that your head and torso are moving towards the intended target , not restricting the head from moving forward or keeping it down

Result
Looking in a mirror you will notice that the hips and shoulders are becoming more parallel to the ground with more weight moving to your forward foot as a result of your head movement; you’ve just improved the impact position , more distance! . So many players fall into the trap of staying on the back foot as a result of the head!

  1.  Continue to move the head and eyes following the thumb on your right hand , with the club exiting parallel to the ground with the  body in a balanced finishing position.

Result

The ability to maintain the relationship of the triangle at address assuming the marriage of the hands was position correctly.   Noticing that the relationship of the hands has not been changed or the club head has not flipped over!

  1. After performing this motion several times, assume the starting position and introduce some club head speed without taking a backswing moving the club to a full balanced finish.

Result As a result you will be creating better impact positions leading to increased distance, direction, trajectories and consistency.

As golfers we don’t have to practice endless hours, become aware of what controls the clubface at impact, performing some dynamic drills without a ball while attaching it to a target and will prove to be beneficial

Two great examples of this motion would be Annika Sorenstam and Robert Allenby

Check it out!!

Casa de Campo

February 17th, 2010

I asked a local caddie if he ever got tired of looking at the waves roll in against the green side wall and the beautiful scenery? His reply” No comprende” I laughed , I took that as a yes!!!

Having the opportunity to spend time working with a client in the Dominican was a great experience,  coaching and playing on  two of the Dyes’ masterpieces was a treat. Playing the famous “Teeth of the Dog” I recall  playing the reachable par 5 13 ,I  proceeded to drive  down this dusty road and there it was , a panoramic view of the ocean waves crashing in!!

The 14th hole is a dog leg right with the ocean on your right, i remember asking the caddy to video my tee shot with the ocean in the background  , I hit the perfect tee shot , a slight cut falling into the right center of the fairway leaving a short iron in. I immediately asked him if he got it ??? Little did I know my videoed shoes and balance looked great after the round !!!!

Who needs video!!!I’ll never forget that tee shot!!!

The end of the week both clients were extremely happy with the changes we had made and were looking forward to putting their swings in action .

Im excited to share some exciting news about an event that will change the way you play the game of golf !!!! Its very cool!!!!

Augusta National Debut

February 8th, 2010

There is something to say about the southern hospitality and the steady diet of great golf courses! Staying at the Sage Valley resort 20 minutes down the road from Augusta National was a great experience, a Tom Fazio masterpiece on 1500 acres of rolling hills , spring fed rivers and tall whispering pines .

Having prepared my student for his experience of a life time was very fulfilling! Ive always said that the first time I’ll drive down Magnolia lane is with my bag on my shoulder !!!

Off to the “Teeth of the Dog” for 4 days to work out , look forward to blogging!!!

Bermuda Blues

January 26th, 2010

An early departure from Bermuda left me feeling a bit blue! After battling winds gusting 25 and rain for the last 6 holes Thursday I felt very good about my play, my ball striking was average considering I hadn’t played in several weeks and my head space was good. Commencing the final four holes of the day were the most difficult, the famous redesigned 16th hole was playing 205 with winds off the ocean and rain made it play upwards of 230 yards . I always think  George Knudson hitting 7 irons into the ocean and watching the ball fall on the green; after making par I hit my tee shot into the water on the par 5 17th and made  a good par unnoticed bye my scorer.

After an exhausting first round looking like I just stepped out of a shower for 45 minutes with my clothes on , I proceeded to sign for a 4 on the 17th and proceeded to take my rain soaked attire off outside the scoring area!!!! I know for certain that next time I might be sitting in my briefs at the scoring table to avoid the early exit to a championship that I really wanted to win !!!

Upwards on onwards off later this week  to help one of Magna’s most liked members to prepare for his Augusta debut!!

2010 Bermuda Open

January 15th, 2010

This is the first time I’ll be in the beautiful Island during the month of January, usually the October schedule is a prelude to Q School and the temperatures are considerably higher. That being said the winners trophy accompanied with a cheque of $20,000. 00 would be a great start to the 20k season .

I’m looking forward to playing the newly renovated Port Royal golf club  recently showcased for the winners of the four majors , knowing the course has become slightly longer with a airy feeling to it may fit right into my game plan.

I’ll be Blogging upon my return, hopefully walking a bit lop sided

Cheers

Hot Winter Routine

January 15th, 2010

I believe the winter months is a great opportunity to develop several areas of your game along adding value to your business. I know the importance of physical training both your body and mind will lead to better results on the golf course .

HOT YOGA!! Wow, I’ve experienced yoga in a air conditioned room reaching for your water bottle after the class was complete, combining breathing , balance, strength, mobility , stability into a 90 minute experience  with temperatures reaching 40 degree Celsius  will leave your body and mind feeling balanced . I have only been attending classes for a month now and the advantages are so good from a golfers body and especially mind!

Combining a two day schedule in the gym coupled with yoga twice a week is a routine I know will lead to better results both on and off the golf course .

Dr. Craig Davies 4 day routine next week

Playoff Win at Calusal Pines

December 20th, 2009

Playoff win at Calusal Pines

Designed by Dr. Michael Hurzdon and Dana Fry on the highest evaluation in south west Florida, lies the masterpiece of Calusal Pines. Having attracted members such as Rocco Mediate and Paul Azinger you know that this place has some fire power .

The two day pro am attracts amateurs and professionals across United States and Canada played over two days , with course conditions impeccable and green speeds faster than PGA tour average .

Lets face it , its not a PGA tour event but the satisfaction of playing in this event for the second time and winning at both attempts has left a great feeling in my belly!  Having last played at Sawgrass in November , it had been a couple of weeks since I picked up a club, knowing that I had my work cut out to compete I had to prepare myself for the difficult green sites and green speeds around 13 on the stimp meter . Approaching the final day I had positioned myself six shots behind the leader; who was sitting a -1 under par; I had to play a flawless round.

Entering the back nine I was at 4 over par for the tournament with only nine holes remaining, making birdies on 11, bogied 12 and followed with birdies on 13,14,16 and eagling a short par 4 17th left me in a playoff for the win . ( 76, 67)

I truly believe that my daily goals allowed me to win this event;  pre shot routines, breathing techniques, ability to recall success and having  the mindset  of accepting  bad shots, which allowed me to hit great ones !

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Sawgrass Pro Am

December 4th, 2009

Standing on the first tee some say that they love it or hate it? I loved it ! . Playing along side some of the best members in the world last week made the experiance an enjoyable one, our team fell short of winning the team event , winning the pro event at -3 was a nice way to end the year.

Pete Dye is a incrediable architect !

2009 PGA Championship

December 4th, 2009

Walking tall after falling a couple shots short of returning to the winners circle again left me feeling a bit empty, after finishing the final round at at total of  -7 under par knowing that two putts over the last three days would of placed me in the playoff for the covenant cup ounce again. It was a pleasure playing with fellow Ontario team member Ken Tarling the last round, he sat with me after the round and mentioned that I dont belong here, ”youre ball striking was very impressive and you have to surround yourself with the best players in the world” , ” You should of won this event hands down”

the word “should” belongs in the past!!!!! I know that I have to become more efficient around the greens and I understand that the quality of the questions we ask ourselfs daily will determine the quality of our lives , so the question is ” When I get to the next level, how will it feel ? ”
