Welcome to the new job. We feel like we already know you.

27 May 2008

One of our portfolio companies is getting a new VP Finance next week. Spent close to a decade at his former shop.

He’s very excited about the new role. His wife hopes the hours won’t be as long as at the old place but figures it can’t be worse.

He’ll rest up first of course. Couple weeks at the cottage. Get that boating license.

Sounds like a good guy.

Spent his penultimate night with the soon-to-be-former colleagues out for “a couple of drinks” and “came home at 11:30 in really, really rough shape. Needless to say he spent the night on the sofa with a big pot nearby.”

I haven’t met him, so how do I know all this? Someone posted it on a blog with the new company name right there.

And since we all, as one VC friend puts it, “manage by Google Alerts” I had the whole story emailed to me before the morning paper landed on the doorstep.

So did his new boss, of course. And the CEO. And board members. And some of his more keen direct reports.

“Welcome to your new job. Glad to have you aboard. There’s a sofa in reception if you ever find you need it. And a pot in the kitchen.”

Absolutely great story, hope he got it out of his system. You just never know what kind of trouble “one more drink” is going to get you into!
