Canadian firm powers Google Maps “street-level” views
29 May 2007
Google unveiled a new feature on Google Maps today that allows you to get a 360 view of any particular street / intersection in certain major cities. You can even “walk” up or down the street and have the imagery follow you along to help give you a better bearing when visiting an unfamiliar location.
Digging a bit, I found that the provider of this technology is Calgary-based Immersive Media, a rapidly moving up-and-comer on the Venture Exchange. Immersive appears to have a number of other neat “360″-related products under development including the ability to pan around moving video.
To try the new feature, check out this map of New York, and click on “Street View”. Drag the orange character that appears to the location you want to view, then pan around / explore.

Immersive Media has been producing 360 degree full motion panoramic video that you can pan and tilt though for awhile now. The original imagery is 30 frames per second full motion video.
Checkout the web-streaming version of Immersive’s content at http://demos.immersivemedia.com
Don’t forget to drag the mouse to look around!
